(Washington, DC) – In the wake of the victory by Democrat Bill Owens in the special election in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, former U.S. Rep. Amo Houghton (R-NY), a member of the RMSP PAC board, issued the following statement:
“For the first time ever, New York’s 23rd Congressional District will be represented in Washington by a Democrat. Instead of uniting behind the Republican nominee, some on the far right launched a divisive third party campaign. At the end of the day, they were successful in forcing the Republican nominee out of the race. Their efforts, however, also resulted in the election of a yet another Democratic Congressman.
“If we are to be successful in rebuilding our Congressional majorities in 2010, then we must come together as a party. To win, we need the support of conservatives and centrists. We should look at the successful campaigns of Bob McDonnell in the Virginia Governor’s race and Chris Christie in the New Jersey Governor’s race as examples of how we can unite the party and win – even in states where Republicans have struggled at the polls over the last few years.”
