RMSP PAC Ready to Defend One of Our Own (Sen. Specter), Fight to Retain Senate GOP Control and Support the White House "Interest in seeing Arlen Specter Win.”

Washington , DC The Republican Main Street Partnership Political Action Committee is ready to help Main Street Senator Arlen Specter beat back any challenger in the 2004 Republican primary, including Rep. Patrick Toomey (R-PA).“We will do all we can to help Main Street Senator Arlen Specter,” said the RMSP PAC's Sarah Chamberlain Resnick .

“We’re not surprised. We look at this as another direct attack on our moderate Republicans by the “single-issue” Club for Growth and its apparent goal of purging the GOP of all moderates,” added Ms. Resnick. “RMSP PAC drew a line in the sand with the Club’s ‘purging’ attempts in the 2002 elections and wants it to be perfectly clear that we have been raising money for 2004. We are ready to fight and fully prepared to go head to head with the Club for Growth AGAIN to defend Senator Specter, and all of our GOP Main Street moderate Senators and Congressmen. We have never lost a head-to-head battle with the Club, and are confident we’ll keep that record in tact.”

In the 2002 primary elections, Main Street successfully defended a similar challenge, re-electing Main Street member Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD) and beating back the single-issue opponent who was given $150,000 in that primary race from the Club. At the same time, RMSP defended Main Street leader Rep. Sherwood Boehlert from another last minute attack from a Club-backed candidate in New York .

“The question we ask now is the same we asked in the 2002 primaries,” insisted Ms. Resnick. “Why is this group that calls itself ‘Good Reagan Republicans’ both attacking and trying to defeat fellow Republicans, especially fiscally conservative Main Street Republicans? Reagan’s 11th commandment of not attacking your own is being ignored by the Club and ultimately costing fellow Republicans millions of dollars that would be better utilized defeating Democrats and maintaining GOP control of the House, Senate and White House.”

The question of the Club’s so-called “Republicanism” is more timely, now, than ever before. This week, White House Chief of Staff Andy Card gave Senator Specter a ringing presidential endorsement. With Senator Specter at his side, Card said, “It’s unusual for the White House to take interest in a congressional race this early, but the White House is very interested in seeing Arlen Specter win. We need his senior leadership in the Senate.” That presidential endorsement came at a fundraising luncheon in Rep. Toomey’s home district that helped bring in nearly $100,000 for Senator Specter’s re-election campaign.

"The supposedly conservative Republican Club, it should be noted,” said Ms. Resnick, “also opposed the President’s choice of Stephen Friedman to be his Chief Economic Adviser, while Main Street supported the choice. Rep. Toomey reportedly has spoken several times with Club for Growth about a possible Senate bid. Ms. Resnick said, “Rep Toomey is an active member and expects Club for Growth to make him their ‘poster child’ in 2004.”
