Calls on Steve
Laffey to Quit
Rhode Island
Senate Race
Chafee Seat
May Provide
Difference in
Protecting GOP
Senate Majority
(Washington, DC)
- With the GOP
majority in the
Senate hanging
in the balance,
the Republican
Main Street
Partnership PAC
urges Steve
Laffey to drop
his primary
challenge to
Senator Lincoln
Chafee (R-RI).
"New polling
makes clear what
we have always
known," said
Sarah
Chamberlain
Resnick, head of
the RMSP PAC, "Linc
Chafee is the
GOP’s only
chance to
maintain the
Rhode Island
Senate seat. For
the good of the
Republican
Party, Steve
Laffey should
abandon his
primary
challenge to
Senator Chafee."
Polling
released this
month by the
non-partisan
Rasmussen
Reports shows
incumbent
Senator Chafee
slightly ahead
of his likely
Democratic
opponent,
Sheldon
Whitehouse, in
the November
general
election, by a
margin of
44-42%. The same
Rasmussen poll
shows that GOP
challenger, and
former Cranston
Mayor, Steve
Laffey would be
crushed in a
general election
match-up with
Whitehouse.
Rhode Island
voters favor the
Democrat,
Whitehouse, over
Laffey by a
staggering 35
points (60-25%).
"This
polling makes it
clear that Linc
Chafee isn’t
just our best
chance to retain
this seat, he is
our only
chance,"
continued
Resnick. "Steve
Laffey and his
supporters at
the Club for
Growth should
put an end to
this misguided
primary
challenge and
work to keep
this seat in
Republican
hands."
The Club
for Growth has
poured hundreds
of thousands of
dollars into
Laffey’s
challenge to
Senator Chafee,
forcing the
national GOP to
divert limited
money and
resources into
defending the
Rhode Island
seat. "The Club
for Growth ought
to be working to
protect the GOP
majority, not
working to
undermine it.
Working to
insure Harry
Reid ends up as
the Senate
Majority Leader
doesn’t seem
like, ‘working
to promote
pro-growth
economic
policies,"
continued
Resnick. "The
reality is that
the Club for
Growth doesn’t
really care
about promoting
pro-growth
economic
policies,
instead they are
obsessed with
collecting
political
scalps."
"Main
Street is proud
of its support
for Senator
Chafee and of
our tireless
work to protect
and expand
Republican
majorities in
both the House
and Senate. We
urge Steve
Laffey and the
Club for Growth
to join us in
protecting the
GOP’s majority
party status in
the fall,"
concluded
Resnick.
