GOP MODERATES SCORE ANOTHER VICTORY IN MARYLAND’S FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

Centrist GOP organizations stave off involvement from the Club for Growth

Washington, DC -- Rep. Wayne Gilchrest’s victory over his GOP primary challenger confirms that Republican voters in Maryland’s First Congressional District want to be represented by a centrist like Gilchrest.

“Voters on the Eastern Shore like Wayne Gilchrest’s brand of Republicanism – fiscally conservative and socially moderate,” said Sarah Chamberlain Resnick, director of the Republican Main Street Partnership Political Action Committee. “His strong victories in two consecutive elections prove that his positions reflect those of his constituents.”

Yesterday Gilchrest defeated GOP state Sen. Richard Colburn by over 20 percentage points. In 2002, he trounced attorney David Fischer 60-36 percent, despite the financial backing Fischer received from organizations including the Club for Growth.

“Gilchrest’s strong showing in 2002 coupled with the support of centrist Republican groups such as the Main Street Individual Fund sent the Club for Growth a clear message to stay out of the primary in Maryland’s First District this year,” Chamberlain Resnick added. “Despite its many threats to oust incumbent moderates both in Maryland and nationwide, the Club is yet to defeat an incumbent Republican.”
